He also wrote a number of plays and screenplays for television. He was a left-wing social critic and activist. In his books and plays he constantly highlighted social inequality issues and injustices in Sweden and abroad.
He took the existing Swedish tradition of crime writing as a form of leftwing social criticism and gave it international recognition, capturing in his melancholy, drunken, bullish detective Kurt Wallander a sense of struggle in bewildered defeat that echoed round the world. A bestial murder, he thought. He first appeared when Sweden was in the middle of a precipitate retreat from the optimistic utopianism of the s and 70s, so that the corruption and decay of the hero found an echo in the corruption and decay of the society around him. It proved a remarkably popular journey.
The author Henning Mankell, who died Monday at 67 from lung cancer , came up with the idea for Kurt Wallander after he returned to Sweden from Africa in the late s and was shocked by the racism he saw there. An ordinary policeman, Inspector Wallander, solving crimes in an ordinary town, Ystad, with fewer than 20, people. Mankell used the inspector, whose name he fished out of a phone book, and the town to chronicle what was happening in Sweden. This violence and its impact on people around it is what I try to reflect in Wallander.
