In the following years, the monastery was run by priests and prominent citizens of the nearby town of Vranja. In , the monastery was burned with fire, along with a relic kept in it, the hand of St. During the same period, only a few monks were permanently resident in it. In , King Peter I of Serbia financed construction of a new residential building for monastery monks so called "King's residence". The Assembly declared Macedonia the nation-state of Macedonians within Yugoslavia  and proclaimed the Macedonian language as the official language of the Macedonian state. In , an underground room from the early middle ages was found in the yard near the monastery. Within the monastery, there is a theological school and iconography is taught there.

Gavril of Lesnovo and St. John of Rila  who lived in the eleventh century in Bulgaria  and the Byzantine Empire. For many years, nobody disturbed him, until one day a hunter chasing a deer came across the saint, who was in prayer. The hunter engaged the monk in conversation, which went on for hours.
